Liberty Partnership Program
The
Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley (ACSLV) Liberty
Partnerships Program (LPP) is a drop-out prevention program
for students in grades 5-12. The New York State Education
Department funds LPP and Associated Colleges has been a recipient
of grant funding since 1988. There are fifty-five Liberty
Partnerships Programs in New York State.
The
purpose of LPP is to promote collaboration among postsecondary
institutions, community organizations, school districts, business
and industry, parents and volunteers. The Associated Colleges
Liberty Partnerships Program works closely with 13 middle
and high school districts in the rural communities of northern
New York to develop programs most suited to their own needs.
College Visits allow students to determine
a suitable college of choice. Job Shadowing
exposes students to careers of interest. Work Mentoring
at local places of business demonstrates the skills and experience
needed to succeed in a specific job or career. Community
Service projects increase skill levels while incorporating
an educational component. Cultural Activities
provide enrichment outside the classroom and exposes students
to cultural as well as intellectual opportunities.
The LPP Project Coordinators monitor students'
progress, tutor, counsel and refer when necessary. The Project
Coordinators help students identify their strengths and develop
a focus. The Liberty Tutor Project recruits approximately
70 college students from the consortium's members each year
to work at participating schools with individuals or groups
of students. This gives the college student an opportunity
to engage in tutoring activities which enriches their educational
experience and provides an in-school experience for those
who are education majors. Additional projects are developed
through the collaborative efforts of the Associated Colleges
of the St. Lawrence Valley Liberty Partnerships Program and
the community to meet the needs of individual students.
Liberty Partnerships has former students who volunteer their
tutoring services in appreciation for the assistance that
they received while in the program. College students from
the consortium often intern with the Liberty Partnerships
Program, offering for example, a Wellness Day or Nutrition
Workshops for those high school students who are enrolled
in the program.
In addition, St. Lawrence University and Clarkson University
offer LPP students across the state a 50% tuition scholarship
if they are successful in the regular admissions process.
Students can receive these scholarships for four years by
maintaining a good academic standing. SUNY Canton and SUNY
Potsdam offer LPP students a $1,000 per year work related
scholarship.
The Liberty Partnerships Program of Associated Colleges has
proven to be a valuable asset for all those involved.
